August Highlights at Newbury Speakers: Stories, Skills, and Celebration
August was a vibrant and inspiring month at Newbury Speakers, filled with memorable stories, practical learning, and well-deserved recognition. Our recent meeting showcased everything Toastmasters stands for: confidence-building, supportive feedback, leadership development, and plenty of laughter along the way.
Here’s a round-up of the highlights from an outstanding evening.
✈️ Table Topics: Summer Holidays with a Twist
Our Table Topics theme, Summer Holidays, took us on a whirlwind journey across continents and experiences — without ever leaving the room.
Members shared:
-
Cultural insights from travels in the Philippines, highlighting generosity, hospitality, and stark contrasts.
-
️ Appreciation for unspoilt landscapes, particularly Romania’s countryside and wilderness.
-
Cycling adventures that tested endurance — and taste buds!
-
️ Culinary experiences that celebrated local culture, especially Greek food, wine, and shared dining traditions.
-
✈️ Travel mishaps, including missed flights, reminding us that flexibility is often the key to great stories.
The session reinforced how impromptu speaking helps us think on our feet, structure our thoughts quickly, and connect authentically with an audience.

One Tuesday, Ray Wilson shared his secrets on how to select the perfect speech topic — whether it’s from your hobbies, career, family history, or even a YouTube rabbit hole!
Evaluations That Build Confidence
Evaluations were a real strength of the evening, demonstrating how constructive feedback accelerates growth.
️ Beata’s Evaluation
Beata delivered a warm, insightful evaluation that balanced encouragement with practical improvement tips. She highlighted strong openings, engaging delivery styles, and offered gentle guidance on areas such as stage positioning and hand use.
Chantal’s Evaluation
Chantal’s evaluation focused on stage presence, pacing, and audience engagement, offering clear, actionable advice. She reminded speakers of the power of centre-stage positioning and the impact of slowing down to let key moments land.
Both evaluations embodied the Toastmasters ethos: supportive, specific, and confidence-building.
