Newbury Speakers is all about supporting people to be better communicators and leaders and offers a friendly and safe environment to gain new insights into speaking and leading.
When a new member joins they receive project manuals for both of these subjects:
- Competent Communication Manual for the Communication Track
- Competent Leader Manual for the Leadership Track
Following these two tracks and working their way through these and subsequent manuals helps people improve both their communication and their leadership skills.
The first step in the communication track is the Competent Communication manual. The 10 speech projects in the manual help develop your speaking skills one step at a time, with each project building upon what you learned in the previous one.
As you prepare and present each project speech you’ll learn the importance of organization, how to use body language and voice to convey your message, how to select the right words and how to use visual aids. You’ll also learn how to speak persuasively and inspire others. After each speech that you deliver you will be evaluated and given feedback to help you to improve.
Once you have completed this manual you will be eligible for Competent Communicator (CC) recognition. You will receive a CC Certificate and two of the Advanced Communication manuals.
Members working in the leadership track learn and practice leadership skills by serving in club roles.
The first step in the leadership track is the Competent Leadership manual. It features 10 projects which you complete while serving in various club meeting roles. An evaluator will give you feedback on each project, helping you to improve.
Once you have completed this manual you will be eligible for Competent Leader (CL) recognition.
After earning your CC award you can move on to more advanced levels choosing from a variety of manuals covering a wide variety of speech types such as Speaking To Inform, Technical Presentations, Special Occassion Speeches, Storytelling etc.
After you earn your CL award you can further refine and develop your leadership skills by working in the advanced leader program.
